The main reason for a high voltage rating on a current transformer is that there is almost no opposition to the magnetic field created by the primary current in the secondary windings, which allows a high number of turns to be placed in the secondary. A high number of turns creates a large amount of energy in the secondary, which can generate a dangerous high voltage.
Many panel meters, watt-hour meters and protective relays require a current transformer to measure AC current. A typical CT has a primary conductor that passes through the center of the transformer and a secondary conductor that connects to the meter. The primary conductor is typically a ring-type or donut-type.
Clamp meters can also be a type of CT that has one or more removable sections of the core, allowing them to be placed around a conductor without disconnecting it. These types of CTs can have a single-turn ratio and are available in various sizes. They can also be designed for higher ratios and be used in non-standard applications such as ground fault detection. Some clamp CTs are designed with a plastic molded case, while others have a bare metal core for higher voltages and a ring-type CT for use in metering applications in switch gear. Some of these CTs have a secondary winding with more than one turn, and can be used to detect three-phase currents or other special requirements.
