A split-core current sensor works by acting as an inductor, responding to the magnetic field surrounding a conductor and producing a secondary coil that generates an induced voltage that is proportional to the rate of change of the primary coil winding. This signal can then be measured and used to determine the current passing through the conductor.
As a result, split-core CTs are less sensitive to external electromagnetic fields than traditional solid-core current transformers, making them more accurate. Additionally, since they don’t require the physical connection of the primary and secondary coils, they can be used in more restrictive applications where access is restricted or dangerous.
Split-core CTs are used in a wide range of electrical monitoring applications, including whole building electricity consumption/generation (CT-based metering), ground fault detection, overcurrent protection and leakage current monitoring.
