Other important specifications for a ring CT include its core construction and burden rating. The core is usually constructed of a laminated iron with a hinged section that allows the CT to slip around a cable without disconnecting it. The core connects the magnetic flux produced by the single-turn primary winding to a wound secondary with many turns. The CT’s burden rating is the sum of its rated secondary output voltage, rated primary current, and all other connections.
The burden rating of a ring CT is the total amount of current it can carry before its performance degrades to unacceptable levels. This is an important specification when choosing a CT, as it dictates the maximum overload current that can be safely passed through the secondary windings of the device it’s connected to. It is common to use a ring CT in conjunction with a wattmeter, for example, which requires a very high load of current to function properly.
