What Is a Clamp Transformador Sensor?

A clamp transformador sensor, or CT clamp, is a special type of current transformer that measures electrical current without touching the conductor or disrupting the circuit. This allows for non-invasive and accurate measurements of current, voltage, resistance, and even frequency. This versatile tool is commonly used by electricians, often with the CT clamp integrated into a general purpose multimeter.

A common form of AC current clamp comprises a split ring made of ferrite or soft iron. A coil is wound around one or both halves, forming the primary winding of the current transformer. The conductor it is clamped around forms the secondary winding, converting the magnetic flux generated by the AC waveform into an electrical signal that can be measured. This type works only with AC and pulse waveforms up to kilohertz, and requires the presence of an alternating magnetic field.

A more modern alternative uses a Hall effect sensor that can measure static magnetic fields, without the need for an alternating field. The sensor is placed in a gap between two halves of the clamp, and can be closed with a push of a button. It is available in several jaw sizes to accommodate different conductor widths. The clamp can be set to a specific measurement mode - current, voltage, resistance, or frequency. The result is shown on the meter's screen. Regular calibration and careful use are important to ensure that it always produces reliable results.
