What Is a Ring Type Current Transformer?
A ring type current transformer is one of the most popular types of current transformers (CTs).ring type current transformer These nifty little devices safely "look" at the current flowing through a conductor and produce a scaled-down version of it for measurement or control purposes. They are found in electrical power systems, power generation plants, and industrial settings for a wide variety of applications.
A basic ring CT uses an insulated plastic case with a single ratio of primary windings.ring type current transformer It can be slipped over a conductor, but should never be left unattached for long periods. For temporary connections, a split ring-type CT can be used, which has a core with a hinged segment that allows the device to be slipped over the conductor without disconnecting it.
This segment is linked to the secondary windings by a magnetic flux produced by the single-turn primary windings. It is possible to obtain non-standard ratios by adding more than a single turn of the secondary. Depending on the application, current transformers may be used with dry or wet insulation systems.
Ring CTs are most often used in electricity metering, protection relaying, and power quality analysis. They can be found in metering and distribution panels in commercial, industrial, and utility electrical power systems. They are also frequently used to help monitor alternating current flow in renewable energy systems.
They are especially useful in larger commercial or industrial electrical installations because they allow standard meters to track power consumption, even when the current is higher than the meter can directly measure. This is particularly important in electrical utilities, where a ring CT can be installed alongside voltage leads in the meter panel to drive the utility's watt-hour meter.
In residential electrical systems, ring CTs are most commonly used to protect outlets in wet locations like kitchens and bathrooms from overcurrent that could trip the circuit breaker. They are also sometimes used to help prevent arcing between grounded and non-grounded devices.
One of the biggest perks of a ring CT is that it can be easily installed in existing electrical circuits. You can simply open the ring, slip it around the conductor, and then close it up. This is a big time-saver, especially when you are working on live circuits.
Another advantage of a ring CT is that it provides precise current data over a large range of currents, from small imbalances to high overload levels. This is important for protective relaying, where accuracy requirements at overcurrents above the normal rating are necessary to ensure good performance of the relays.
Finally, a ring CT is compact and easy to install in tight spaces, making it an excellent choice for retrofit projects. For example, a ring-type CT can be quickly added to an existing panel to monitor the current going to a new motor or other piece of equipment without disrupting the operation. They are also ideal for rework and reconfiguration work in existing cabinets. In fact, they can be inserted in place of existing CTs or wired to replace other types of current transformers, such as screw-terminals.
